Addressing Challenges in Self-Compassion Journaling

Journaling can be a great way to build self-compassion but it’s not always easy. Here are some common challenges that I’ve faced when trying to practise self-compassion journaling and some strategies I use to deal with them:

  • Feeling stuck: Sometimes when I sit down to journal I feel stuck and I don’t know where to start – it can be frustrating! To overcome this challenge I use journal prompts like the ones above.
  • Being too critical: I can often be too critical of myself when I write. To overcome this challenge I try to treat myself as I would a good friend, with kindness and respect.
  • Forgetting to journal: When life gets busy it can be hard to remember to journal consistently. To overcome this challenge I try to make journaling a habit. I challenge myself to journal at a specific time of the day, even if it’s only for 5 minutes.
